To Be a Foodie Is Not a Bad Thing

To be a foodie is not a bad thing. Loving food is perfectly okay. But what kind of food do you like to eat? How do you eat, and how much? Do you eat a little? Are you vegan, or do you mostly eat carbohydrates? Do you try to include the nutrients your body needs? Do you use too much salt? Do you know how to balance what you eat?

I love food. There are days when I don’t think much about it. Other days, I know I need to fast. And sometimes fasting becomes a chore, and I can’t wait to eat. Sometimes I’m focused on food because I’m not fasting. Other times, perhaps there simply isn’t food in the house.

At the end of the day, what we eat matters. Too much of anything can affect us. Perhaps the answer is moderation. I’m asking myself that, too, because sometimes I just want to indulge. When you’re watching your sugar or potassium, it can be hard to resist something you enjoy. But is there balance? Is there a way to return to balance?

Let’s not make life so difficult, black and white, or too rigid. It’s okay to indulge a little. It’s okay to eat healthy, and it’s okay when a meal isn’t perfect.

Sometimes you’re busy with traffic, work, hospital appointments, daycare, or simply getting through the day. You may need to grab a bite without checking whether it has every nutrient. It’s better to eat something and get some energy than to wait for the perfect meal and end up too tired or hungry to manage.

Let’s not be unnecessary sticklers. Give your body what it needs when it needs it. It may not look exactly how you planned, but sometimes the need to eat has to come before the comfort of eating at home. When push comes to shove, take in something nourishing enough to give your body and brain energy.

Footnote: By all means, don’t starve yourself or your brain. If the day is too full, prioritize yourself and eat something. The work will continue even when you step away. It’s okay to indulge sometimes, too. Just learn how to process the excess and find your way back to balance.
