As an African, I sometimes struggle to explain what it means to “take a walk in the woods” simply to admire nature. Where I come from, disappearing into the bushes alone is not always interpreted as a peaceful attempt to clear one’s mind. If I had spoken too freely about wandering into the woods forContinue reading “Geographically Misplaced”

Mind Your Signature
I had just returned from Atlanta, and I was tired. Not just physically tired. I was tired in that peculiar way that comes from traveling, being with your children, trying to make sure everything is done, and then realizing that you haven’t had a single moment to simply unwind. There had been no time forContinue reading “Mind Your Signature”
Reflections after Church Service.
THE GOD MY ANCESTORS KNEW; The God My Ancestors Knew Sometimes, when I sit in church and watch the incense rise toward the ceiling, I think about my ancestors. I wonder if heaven smells familiar to them. The priest swings the thurible, and the smoke rises slowly toward the altar. The congregation becomes quiet. SomeContinue reading “Reflections after Church Service.”
The Measure of Days:A Legacy of Purpose; The contrast between two lives lived side by side often reveals the truest definition of health. In a quiet neighborhood, two fathers of the exact same age lived as next-door neighbors. Both had recently arrived in the United States, deeply proud and excited that their children had made it to America to build a new future. One father had come from a beautiful tropical island, while the other had journeyed from Africa. Despite their shared joy in their children’s success, a vast distance separated their outlooks on existence.Their morning routine was always the same. As the sun began to break over the horizon, the two men would meet outside to take a long walk together. But as their feet hit the pavement, their conversations revealed two entirely different worlds. The father from the island had a son who had become a highly successful banker. This father’s entire mindset was geared toward an obsession with accumulation, greed, and a desperate pursuit of longevity. During their walks, he would boast loudly about his family’s status, shouting declarations that he would live to see his children’s children. Yet, the moment he returned inside from their morning routine, his actions betrayed his words. He would lose himself in physical carelessness and overindulgence, eating heavy meals until he passed out into a deep sleep. He would leave food everywhere and plates unwashed, completely forgetting his promises to help keep the house clean. His day was spent holding his phone, calling people back home to announce his grand status, chasing the outward illusion of long life while treating his own body with reckless disregard. The father from Africa possessed a completely different soul. He was a man of profound simplicity, driven entirely by a sense of purpose. He did not care about material vanity, the kind of car he drove, or how many countries he could boast of visiting. Though he was the exact same age as his neighbor, he carried a natural vitality that made him look twenty years younger, unbothered by the superficial anxieties of the world. He spent his energy solving real problems, bringing families together, and ensuring the neighborhood was safe. He owned a gun that he never used for aggression, pulling it out only when stepping up to perform nighttime vigilante watch to protect the community. He possessed only a little in terms of material wealth, but with that little, he shared selflessly with anyone in need. He had no room for greed. He never showed a fearful, desperate attachment to long life just for the sake of counting years; instead, he possessed a deep love for the meaning of life itself. The irony of their health unfolded clearly over time. The island father, despite his constant public proclamations of longevity, lived a fragile existence trapped in the physical toll of his own overindulgence and heavy, careless habits. The African father, who never spent a single moment obsessing over his lifespan and simply poured himself out for his community, was never once hospitalized. He lived with clean health, a sharp mind, and an unbothered spirit. He proved that a body thrives when the soul is occupied with serving others rather than serving itself. In the end, a life spent chasing longevity through greed and vanity remains empty, running out of breath before its time. But a life anchored in selfless purpose, quiet contentment, and protection of the neighborhood builds a natural sanctuary of health that no medicine can buy.Footnotes:Scriptural Reflections on Purpose and Well-being: The scriptures remind us that true vitality flows from a heart at peace and a life dedicated to righteousness. Proverbs 14:30 teaches that a sound heart is life to the body, but envy and ambition rot the bones. True satisfaction is found not in what we gather or boast about, but in the quiet strength of walking uprightly and honoring the days we are given.Author’s Disclaimer and Advice: This narrative reflects a personal observation on the true sources of human health and longevity. It is not an indictment of ambition or the natural desire for a long life, but a reminder to look out for oneself by prioritizing peace of mind and selflessness over greed and physical carelessness. True wellness begins when we stop worrying about how long we live and start focusing on how well we love and serve those around us.
THE PAINTED VAIL: Armor, Art and Arsenic.
The cosmetic counter at the front of the department store was a temple of transformation. On one side of the glass partition stood Maya, a woman who viewed makeup not as a luxury, but as essential armor. Maya suffered from severe, cystic acne and deep hyperpigmentation. For her, the thick layers of full-coverage foundation andContinue reading “THE PAINTED VAIL: Armor, Art and Arsenic.”

HE WAS ALWAYS THERE!
He Was Already There “Abigail?” “Yes, Mommy?” “How was school today?” “Fine, Mommy. How was work?” I looked at her and smiled. “You know, I really like it when you speak like an adult. You’re barely seven.” She was growing before my eyes. She was beginning to see me as more than the person whoContinue reading “HE WAS ALWAYS THERE!”
